New report positions biosolutions as a powerful driver of Indonesia’s Golden Indonesia 2045 ambition

As Indonesia lays the foundations for Golden Indonesia 2045, biosolutions could become a powerful driver of economic growth, job creation and industrial transformation, according to a new report. Published as the government implements its National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2025-2045 and BAPPENAS develops Indonesia’s national bioeconomy roadmap, The Value of Biosolutions: Growth and Prosperity – Indonesia Edition highlights how Indonesia’s abundant biological resources and ambitious development agenda could position the country as a future bioeconomy leader in Southeast Asia.

The report estimates that Indonesia’s biosolutions sector could generate US$2.23 billion in economic value by 2035 while employment could nearly triple over the same period. That’s equivalent to more than twice the value of Indonesia’s current coffee export, one of Indonesia’s most celebrated agricultural commodities.

Every new biosolutions job is also expected to support another 3.8 jobs across the wider economy, with particularly strong effects in agriculture and food systems. This multiplier effect nearly 60% higher than the global average, underscoring how biosolutions, particularly in Indonesia, can strengthen local supply chains and create value far beyond the sector itself.

The findings suggest biosolutions could help accelerate progress across many of Indonesia’s key development priorities, from food security, energy diversification and industrial transformation to job creation, investment, circularity and long-term resilience. The study also provides new evidence to support policy development and collaboration as Indonesia advances its bioeconomy ambitions.

“Biosolutions represent an important opportunity for Indonesia to harness its abundant biological resources in ways that support economic prosperity, environmental stewardship and national resilience,” says Leonardo Adypurnama Alias Teguh Sambodo, Deputy for Food, Natural Resources, and Environmental Affairs at BAPPENAS. “As Indonesia advances its bioeconomy strategy, collaboration among government, industry, academia and development partners will be critical to unlocking this potential.”

“Around the world, biosolutions are helping countries produce more with less, strengthen food and energy security, reduce emissions and build more resilient industries,” says Yonny Setiadi, Country Manager Indonesia, Novonesis. “Indonesia has the resources and ambitions to become a bioeconomy leader in Southeast Asia. This report shows how biosolutions, supported by the right policies, can accelerate growth, create high-quality jobs and advance the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045”.

The report also underscores the value of international collaboration and knowledge-sharing in supporting Indonesia’s emerging bioeconomy. Denmark’s experience offers insights that may prove valuable as Indonesia develops its national bioeconomy strategy:

“Denmark has seen how biological innovation can create real economic value. For decades, Danish companies and research institutions have developed technologies in enzymes, fermentation, and biotechnology that support industrial growth while contributing to our green transition. As Indonesia develops its national bioeconomy strategy, there is a valuable opportunity to bring these elements together and ensure that biosolutions are part of the country’s long-term economic development”, says Ambassador of Denmark to Indonesia H.E. Sten Frimodt Nielsen.

The Value of Biosolutions Report was launched last week at BAPPENAS, where policymakers, industry leaders, researchers and development partners gathered to discuss the role biosolutions can play in advancing Indonesia’s economic, industrial and sustainability ambitions. The event was co-hosted by BAPPENAS, Novonesis and the Embassy of Denmark in Indonesia.
