Danish toys giant LEGO goes green. The botanical elements such as leaves, bushes and trees will be made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane in the future and will appear in LEGO boxes already in 2018.

Maccaferri Group and Bio-on take a step forward to produce bioplastics in Northern Italy
SECI, the holding belonging to the Maccaferri family, launched the bioplastics project to be carried out at the San Quirico production site using the Bio-on technology. The project will be carried out by the company Sebiplast s.r.l., a controlled company of the SECI Group, in the production site where today stands the sugar factory Sadam S.p.A.

Titan Hemp and Green Growers Tech Alliance launched the JV Titan Bioplastics
Titan Hemp, a leading provider of hemp commodities and extracts based in Seattle (USA), has formed a joint venture with Green Growers Technology Alliance (GGTA) to create a new company, Titan BioPlastics, a manufacturing and development entity focused on creating plant-based composites and products for a wide variety of manufacturing applications, including packaging, nanotechnology, bio-polymers, construction, and bioplastics.

Bioindustrial Innovation Canada invests in Sacramento-based Origin Materials
Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) has made a COMM SCI (Centre for Commercialization of Sustainable Chemistry Innovation) investment, whose amount wasn’t disclosed, in Origin Materials through BIC’s Sustainable Chemistry Alliance (SCA) investment fund, as part of an investment round that will see Origin construct its first commercial scale demonstration facility in Sarnia (Ontario) by late 2018.

The bioplastics industry moves another step forward: the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) – a voluntary initiative of industry organizations representing waste collectors, plastic recyclers, PET material producers and brand owners – has given interim approval for the recyclability of polyethylenefuranoate (PEF), produced by Synvina, the Joint Venture between Avantium and Basf, in the European bottle recycling market.

Total Corbion PLA yesterday officially launched its operations to produce and market Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) polymers. PLA is a biobased and biodegradable polymer made from annually renewable resources. As announced by parent companies Total and Corbion last November, the new company is a 50/50 joint venture based in the Netherlands.

Bio-on acquired an industrial plant to produce its own special biopolymers
Bio-on, the Italian industrial biotech company, will begin producing its own special biopolymers at a new 1,000 tons/year plant to be completed in 2017 with an investment of €15 million. To announce this was Marco Astorri, chairman and Ceo of Bio-on S.p.A. who outlined to the financial community the new 2017-2020 industrial plan last week. Bio-on will manage to revive an abandoned manufactory site of Granarolo, an Italian food company which operates oin the fresh milk and dairy-cheese sector, dry pasta, deli meats and vegetable foods.
