EuropaBio and its local partner Toulouse White Biotechnology are organizing the European Forum for Industrial Biotechnology and the Bioeconomy (EFIB). The forum will be hosted in the Centre de Congrès Pierre Baudis in Toulouse from 16 to 18 of October.

The British bioeconomy takes a step forward: five established R&D centres across the UK have today announced a new alliance, BioPilotsUK, to position Britain as a global leader in biorefining technology development and bio-based product manufacture, two key elements of the bioeconomy.
Scotland is set to create waves among the global biotechnology arena as its Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC) announces over £3 million of investment across six game changing synthetic biology projects including greener skincare products, more sustainable plastics and improvements to personalised medicine therapies.
Without biotechnology there is no bioeconomy. And the bioeconomy is integral part of circular economy. This is the strong message that comes from EFIB, the European Forum on industrial biotechnology and the bioeconomy which was held in Brussels on October 27 to 29, organized by EuropaBio and Smithers Rapra.
“I am convinced that what we lack today to confirm the value creation potential of the industrial biotechnology are concrete examples of investments to construct real industrial operations that are profitable and that create manufacturing jobs.
So all national and European initiatives – co-investment, easing of regulatory procedures, tax incentives, etc. – that will facilitate risk-taking in the industrial phase will be welcomed to demonstrate the industrial biotechnology’s potential and accelerate its development”. “Europeans are traditionally very good at creating new technologies, but our weakness is commercialization. Europe must put more emphasize on turning the research results into innovation. Overregulation is also a serious challenge for the European Union”. “Biobased products are perfect examples of the shift towards a circular economy as they are made from renewable raw materials rather than from finite fossil carbon sources. However, the link between the bioeconomy and the circular economy is not always made and we need it to be better recognised in order to ensure that the right supportive measures are put in place to help enable this transition. This is why we are focusing on the circular economy in anticipation of the European Commission’s proposal which is due out towards the end of this year”.
