LanzaTech, Virgin Atlantic and partners are one-step closer to building the world’s first large scale Alcohol to Jet (ATJ) facility producing commercial quantities of fuel in the UK. The commercial facility would convert low carbon ethanol produced from waste emissions, to jet fuel.

FedEx plans to use alternative jet fuel made from wood waste
FedEx, the global courier delivery services company headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, entered into an agreement with Colorado-based Red Rock Biofuels to purchase alternative jet fuel made from wood waste. Starting in 2017, FedEx will blend the first 6 million gallons of this jet fuel at its Oakland hub, ultimately producing at least 48 million gallons over an 8 year term.
Oslo Airport is the world’s first to offer jet biofuel to all airlines
Starting from last Friday, jet biofuel is offered to all airlines that refuel at Oslo Airport, making the airport the world’s first to offer this service through the normal supply mechanism. Air BP is the supplier of the jet biofuel and Lufthansa Group, SAS and KLM have already signed agreements to purchase the fuel.
Virent bio-jet provides more than 50% reduction in particulate matter emissions
Virent was chosen to participate in the initial Rolls-Royce Laboratory Test program, and was then selected by Rolls-Royce to proceed to the more advanced Rig Testing portion of the program. Virent’s SAK fuel blend met all test requirements and the report concluded that the fuel “…offers the potential to be [a] drop-in fuel and hence achieve approval for use for the aviation industry”.
French Global Bioenergies joins German Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy
Global Bioenergies has joined aireg, Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany. The French industrial biology company, which is currently developing its demonstration plant in Leuna, Germany, will soon be able to produce alternative jet fuel from sugars. Through their cooperation both organizations plan to expedite the market uptake of renewable, low-carbon fuels in the aviation sector.
