We are navigating turbulent times, yet the bioeconomy continues to gain momentum, demonstrating its resilience and relevance across the globe. In just the past month, we have seen remarkable developments from various regions – each reinforcing the growing recognition of bio-based solutions as a pathway to sustainability and economic transformation. Here are some of the latest developments shaping the future of the bioeconomy.
Jukka Kantola is the founder and CEO of World Bioeconomy Forum and also the Chair of the World Bioeconomy Association. He talks with Il Bioeconomista before the next G20 which will be held in Brazil, where the circular bioeconomy will be one of the main topics. “This G20 Summit – he says – marks a pivotal moment”

Jukka Kantola talks to Il Bioeconomista. The CEO of the World Bioeconomy Forum was invited to a historic bioeconomy panel at UNFCC COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to present findings of the bioeconomy society to the climate mitigation discussion.
For this year “The World BioEconomy Forum Goes to the USA – Live from Washington D.C. “The United States is making significant strides in the global bioeconomy. USA is not alone in this space as there is a growing interest in the bioeconomy – like in China, India or Brazil. All in all it looks like that number of bioeconomy strategies is growing, bioeconomy is providing solutions for the mankind and its economic value is also multiplying. All these requires more collaboration over various sectors and regions.
World BioEconomy Forum has responded to this evolving environment – Kantola claims- by launching a digital survey last February and open until end of October. Results of the survey will be unfolded on December 12 in Washington D.C. at the conference whose title is “Creating a Global Hub for the Bioeconomy”.

The World BioEconomy Forum and partners launched a survey on the formation of a global hub to serve the bioeconomy sector. The aim of the hub is to encourage dialogue relating to all important matters concerning the global bioeconomy as well as its challenges and opportunities. The survey will allow stakeholders across the globe to advise and inform as to what the topics and subjects the hub should be comprised of. The bioeconomy is set to become a major economic stream in the future, and therefore will require growing international collaboration between the various parties.

We have witnessed that several economies are putting more efforts into the bioeconomy. Only in the last half year alone there have been multiple examples of work being carried out, despite other challenges, including the tail end of the pandemic, geopolitical tensions and energy prices.
“The pandemic is still with us and it’s not over. I think it only reminds humankind to have more balance with nature. The signs of climate change are there for all to see, for instance more storms and drought. We have seen the damage just one virus has caused, there are millions of these in nature and they have been here much longer than human beings.” To say it – in this interview with Il Bioeconomista – is Jukka Kantola, CEO of NC Partnering and founder of the World Bioeconomy Forum.

Experts from the leading edge of bioeconomy gather together in the outstanding nature of northeast Finland for roundtable discussions at the second ever World BioEconomy Forum in September. From September 11 to 13, Ruka will host some of the world’s most influential bioeconomy stakeholders, policymakers, researchers and innovators as speakers. Program is arranged by well-established Advisory Board (AB) of circular bioeconomy advocators.
Finnish bioeconomy takes a step forward. KaiCell Fibers Ltd is led to the stage that preparation for construction can get started. Environment permit is in the authority evaluation, mill site is contracted, and coding is getting ready, big share of the wood supply is pre-contracted, technical preparations are well advanced and industrial partners have readiness to join in.
As the world population keeps growing and living standards improve in many third world countries, there is an ever-increasing demand for textiles and textile fibres. The global textile market currently amounts to about 90 Mtons per annum, but is projected to exceed 140 Mtons by 2025.
Finnish company KaiCell Fibers completed a technical-commercial feasibility study (FS), mainly delivered by CTS Engtec Oy, and now is ready for the next steps towards making the biorefinery in Paltamo, northeast Finland, a reality.
