Avantium, LVMH and Tereos form strategic alliance to scale releaf® production across Europe

Avantium’s pilot plant in the Nerherlands

Avantium, a Dutch leader in renewable and circular polymer materials, signed Memoranda of Understanding with Tereos, a global leader in sugar, starch, alcohol and bioethanol production, and with LVMH GAÏA, the scientific and environmental R&D division of LVMH Moet Hennessy – Louis Vuitton, the world leader in luxury. Together, the parties will establish a strategic collaboration to accelerate the industrial-scale production of PEF (polyethylene furanoate), Avantium’s 100% renewable and circular performance polymer known under the brand name releaf®. Releaf® is made from plant-based feedstocks and can be applied across food & beverage packaging, cosmetic packaging, fashion and industrial fibers. This alliance unites Avantium as the inventor of releaf® with trailblazers Tereos and LVMH to scale bio-based plastics from plant-based resources, contributing to the transition away from fossil-based plastics.

Copenhagen will host the launch of the new EU Bioeconomy Strategy on December 2

All the EU bioeconomy stakeholders will gather in Copenhagen in December. As Denmark assumes the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2025, the University of Copenhagen and the Danish Ministry for Green Transition, on behalf of the European Commission, will host two conferences focused on advancing the EU’s green transition through bioeconomy, food systems, and biodiversity. The conferences will take place on the 2 and 3 December 2025.

At IFIB 2025 in Turin, which was be held last Thursday and Friday, the world bioeconomy stakeholders called for action. “It’s a now or never!” This is, extremely briefly, the message that comes from the last edition of the International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy. In this invitation made at the opening of the forum by the executive director of the CBE JU, Nicolò Giacomuzzi-Moore, it can be synthesized the will of over 200 forum participants to move rapidly towards the creation of new markets for the bioeconomy and to accelerate the transition to a new, more sustainable economy, which finally could strengthen Europe’s competitiveness, growth and resilience.

Evonik adds plant-based product BoruCare® Capsin to its portfolio for ruminants

With a new, natural product rich in capsaicinoids, polyphenols, and flavonoids, Evonik aims at helping the dairy industry address two major challenges: nutrient deficiency in early lactation and heat stress. The German company has developed BoruCare® Capsin in cooperation with Heidi Botanicals, a French specialist in plant-based products for livestock. The product has been presented at SPACE 2025 and it will be commercially available in Europe from Q4 2025.

The largest and most modern consumer packaging board production line in Europe was inaugurated in Oulu, Finland. The new line was inaugurated by Prime Minister of Finland Petteri Orpo, Chair of Stora Enso’s Board of Directors Kari Jordan, President and CEO of Stora Enso Hans Sohlström, and Oulu mill’s Chief Shop Steward Olli-Pekka Kaikkonen. Stora Enso’s Oulu unit serves the growing demand for renewable packaging globally and contributes to the transition to a circular bioeconomy. At the same time, the production site supports Finland’s competitiveness and increases exports with products of higher added value.
