Neste reached an agreement with Amazon to provide 7,500 metric tons (2.5 million gallons) of neat Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ for its Amazon Air cargo operations at San Francisco International Airport and Ontario International Airport in California, through to the end of 2025. This agreement makes Amazon the first company to purchase and use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Ontario International Airport, ranked among the top 10 cargo airports in the U.S.
Lygos, Inc., a sustainable specialty chemical company, has plans to open a state-of-the-art Sustainable Solutions Center in Hayward, CA. Designed as a commercial launch facility, Lygos will scale production of bio-inspired solutions that are designed to replace persistent and carbon intensive chemicals with products that are better, cleaner, and cost effective. Rio Tinto has successfully completed the full transition of its heavy machinery from fossil diesel to renewable diesel at its Boron, California operation, making it the first open pit mine in the world to achieve this milestone. The change to renewable diesel brings an anticipated CO2 equivalent reduction of up to 45,000 tonnes per year, comparable to eliminating the annual emissions of approximately 9,600 cars.
Neste and Marathon closed the transaction for the establishment of the joint venture to be called Martinez Renewables. This is a 50/50 joint venture to produce renewable diesel following a conversion project of Marathon’s refinery in Martinez, California (the Martinez Renewable Fuels project).
Neste and Avfuel Corporation joined forces to create an efficient, continuous supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the United States. Neste will provide Avfuel with SAF in volumes able to meet the growing demands of Avfuel’s customers, including fixed base operators (FBOs), airports, flight departments, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and commercial operators. Avfuel will be a branded SAF distributor for Neste, and will sell it under the brand name Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
Renewable Energy Group (REG) entered into an agreement with Hunt & Sons, Inc. to supply REG Ultra Clean at 12 locations in Northern California. REG Ultra Clean blends biodiesel and renewable diesel. The patent-pending combination delivers both biodiesel’s excellent lubricity and renewable diesel’s high Cetane and low Cloud Point in a 100% renewable fuel.
Fleet drivers in Northern and Central California can now fuel up at multiple commercial fueling sites with high-performance, low-carbon Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, thanks to the recent opening of three new locations. The new cardlock stations join the first location in San Leandro, California, which opened in March 2019.

Italian company Saipem signed a Memorandum of Understanding as well as an exclusive agreement with California Ethanol & Power, LLC, for the realisation of a low carbon emission plant for the production of ethanol fuels, electricity from renewable sources, biomethane and other secondary products derived from sugar cane cultivated on site.
The California Council on Science and Technology has released the seventh and final report in its California’s Energy Future (CEF) project, “California’s Energy Future: The Potential for Biofuels”. The CEF project seeks ways the State could meet the mandated reductions of the state’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, exploring possible energy strategies for California through in-depth examinations of different technology scenarios. The focus of this report is an assessment of the potential for fuels produced from renewable biological resources to contribute to the energy needs of California, particularly for transportation.
