Clean manufacturing leader Genomatica signed a first-of-its-kind deal with Aquafil to build a demonstration scale facility to produce the largest quantity of 100% renewable nylon-6 ever available. Responding to surging consumer interest in sustainable products, the material will go to leading global brands eager to explore and develop renewable products, create showcase goods and test feedback with customers. The deal is a 50-fold expansion over previous production levels and represents significant acceleration toward commercializing renewably-sourced nylon-6 — a material that is poised to reshape a $960 billion textile industry that touches millions of lives every day, from the carpet we walk on to the clothes we wear.
Berlin is the world capital of bioeconomy. Approximately 3,000 participants from all over the world are taking part today in the Global Bioeconomy Summit 2020. That Summit takes place from November 16 to 20, guided virtually from the German capital city. Germany’s partners are ASEAN/Thailand, Japan, Latin America, East Africa and – of particular importance – the EU Commission.

Alfa Laval, biofuel producer MASH Energy and shipowner DFDS entered into a collaboration, funded in part by Shipping Lab, a Danish non-profit initiative focused on smart shipping. “Two 25 m3 tanks have been installed at the centre, one of which is stainless steel and dedicated for testing of biofuels and other new fuel types,” said Lars Bo Andersen, Alfa Laval Test & Training Centre Manager. “New fuel alternatives are constantly being introduced to the marine industry, but the knowledge about their behaviour in marine fuel systems is limited. We want to extend that knowledge through testing, beginning with biofuels.”
America has chosen Democrat Joe Biden as its 46th president. And California Sen. Kamala Harris, his running mate, will make history as the first woman, the first Black person and the first person of South Asian descent to become vice president. Through their innovative partnership, LanzaTech, Total and L’Oréal premiered the world’s first sustainable packaging made from captured and recycled carbon emissions. The successful conversion process takes place in three steps: LanzaTech captures industrial carbon emissions and converts them into ethanol using a unique biological process; Total, thanks to an innovative dehydration process jointly developed with IFP Axens, converts the ethanol into ethylene before polymerizing it into polyethylene that has the same technical characteristics as its fossil counterpart; L’Oréal uses this polyethylene to produce packaging with the same quality and properties as conventional polyethylene.
“In my opinion the bioeconomy is an important concept currently missing in the Green Deal, and it should be connected to the circular economy concept (a main pillar of the Green Deal).” Marc Palahí, Director at EFI (European Forest Institute), talks to Il Bioeconomista.
