Novo Holdings and LanzaTech, a pioneer in the production of next generation fuels and chemicals through the recycling of carbon pollution, have formed a partnership to grow LanzaTech’s revolutionary sustainable fuels and chemicals platform. Novo Holdings is making a $72 million investment in the company in a Series E financing, and Senior Director Anders Bendsen Spohr will join LanzaTech’s Board of Directors.
Stora Enso has initiated feasibility studies for a possible cross laminated timber (CLT) unit in connection with its Ždírec mill in the Czech Republic and a new construction beam unit to be located at the Ybbs mill in Austria. The Scandinavian company also plans to consolidate production to increase focus on efficiency and to streamline the asset base.
Cargill is one of the main players of the world bioeconomy. The company founded in 1865 by William Wallace Cargill in Minnesota, USA, has today more than 155,000 employees worldwide serving food and beverage manufacturers, foodservice companies and retailers with food ingredients as well as food and non-food applications.
In this exclusive interview with Il Bioeconomista, Colleen May, President of Cargill’s Bioindustrial Group, tells us what is the bioeconomy from her company’s point of view and what are Cargill’s next steps in the green chemistry.

Ferrari talks with us about the main challenges the European chemical industry is facing, the circular bioeconomy and the next steps of Versalis in the green chemistry field.

A new movement focused on a circular bioeconomy, which brings together all people who strongly believe that a more sustainable world is possible. A movement which takes the leadership at global level to make the circular bioeconomy happen.
Manifesto
We want to launch the BioRev, a movement open to anyone who believes that the bioeconomy and the circular economy need joint forces to reconcile economy, society and the environment.
The two concepts have advanced in parallel but in order to become mainstream they need to mutually reinforce each other to be the basis of a new economic paradigm. We want to promote the spread of a new economic and social model, not only to preserve our environment and protect biodiversity, but also to reduce the social inequalities that the current model has produced. We are convinced that the circular bioeconomy is democracy.
We want to lead a movement that addresses the challenges that this millennium presents us with the awareness that there is no time to lose and that today we have all the knowledge and material conditions to generate wealth and qualified jobs without polluting the planet and compromising the health conditions of workers and citizens. Over fifty countries in the world, from north to south and from east to west, have included the circular bioeconomy in their programs of sustainable development and the fight against climate change. Yet still today there is a huge resistance from those who defend positions no longer defensible, without looking to our future and the one of new generations.
This generation, our generation, has an essential task: to reverse the trend, to create a new development within the limit of the planet that is inclusive for all, men and women, in the North and the South of the world. For this reason we launch this manifesto asking you to join the BioRev.

Neste Corporation signed an agreement to sell its fuel retail business consisting of 75 fuel stations and a terminal in St. Petersburg region to PJSC Tatneft, one of the leading integrated oil and gas companies in Russia. “The divestment – Finnish company stated – has no impact on Neste’s Marketing & Services’ operations in Finland and the Baltic countries”.
The German Federal Ministry of Education and Science announced that in 2020 the topic of the annual “Year of Science” will be Bioeconomy.
“We need more Finlands in the Bioeconomy”. This is what John Bell, director Bioeconomy at the EU Commission said yesterday in Helsinki at the European Bioeconomy Scene 2019, organized with the objective to achieve an inclusive and sustainable bioeconomy for Europe.
Helsinki is the European capital of bioeconomy. A Bioeconomy Conference is being organised to contribute to achieving an inclusive and sustainable bioeconomy for Europe. Finland’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the European Commission are jointly organising the conference, and it is one of the events to be held in Helsinki under Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
BP Ventures has made an investment of $30 million in Calysta, Inc., an alternative protein producer, that will use BP’s natural gas to produce protein for fish, livestock and pet feeds.
The investment supports BP’s strategy of creating new markets in which gas can play a material role in delivering a more sustainable future and establishing a strategic relationship between BP and California-based start-up Calysta around gas and power supply.
Calysta’s proprietary gas fermentation technology produces FeedKind® protein, a sustainable feedstock that can be used for fish, livestock and pet nutritional products. The innovative process has the potential to help meet the growing demand for feed in the aquaculture and wider agriculture markets without some of the environmental impacts of current sourcing methods.
