A fibre-based ice cream package designed by Stora Enso for the Finnish artisan ice cream manufacturer Vanhan Porvoon Jäätelötehdas has been awarded in the international WorldStar competition. The renewable and recyclable packaging was designed by product designer Outi Honkavaara at Stora Enso’s DesignStudio in Lahti, Finland.
“The key concern is that there is no time to wait. We must act now and while countries are starting to make changes to drive a low carbon future, more needs to be done quickly. We need to take more risks and move more quickly. We need to realize the bigger risk is not acting quickly enough”. Jennifer Holmgren talks to Il Bioeconomista. In this exclusive interview, the CEO of LanzaTech gives us her point of view regarding the climate crisis and the ‘carbonsmart’ revolution that the Illinois-based company is leading at global scale.

“Europe needs an ambitious ‘Green Innovation Deal’ to accelerate towards our 2030 goals and to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Our 2030 and 2050 goals require decarbonisation at a speed at least six times faster than anything globally achieved so far.” John Bell, Director Healthy Planet at the DG Research & Innovation of EU Commission, talks to Il Bioeconomista. In this long and exclusive interview, he talks about the EU Updated Bioeconomy Strategy one year later its presentation in Brussels. “The main task for us in the next years – he says – will be the implementation of the updated European Bioeconomy Strategy. However, to fully deploy the bioeconomy across all of Europe, we need the help and engagement of the Member States and regions”.

Carbon recycling pioneer, LanzaTech, continues to make strides in scaling up its alcohol to jet (ATJ) platform. Commercialization of the ATJ process has been years in the making, starting with the partnership between LanzaTech and the U.S Energy Department’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. PNNL developed a unique catalytic process to upgrade ethanol to first commercial flight with Virgin Atlantic, sustainable aviation fuel made from captured pollution is ready for full scale demonstration and commercialization.
SHV Energy joined the KLM Corporate BioFuel Programme (KCBP). In so doing, SHV Energy will reduce its headquarters’ CO2 emissions by 50%. Additionally, the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has extended its participation in KCBP for a further two-year period. TU Delft first joined the programme on 1 July 2017.
Borealis, a leading provider of innovative polyolefin solutions headquartered in Vienna, and Teste, the world’s leading provider of renewable diesel, renewable jet fuel and an expert in delivering drop-in renewable chemical solutions, entered into strategic co-operation for the production of renewable polypropylene (PP). The co-operation will enable Borealis to start using Neste’s 100% renewable propane produced with Neste’s proprietary NEXBTL™ technology as renewable feedstock at its facilities in Kallo and Beringen, Belgium, starting end of 2019.
The EIB boosts its support for cities and regions to tackle climate change and foster social inclusion. During the last 5 years (2014-2018), the EU bank dedicated EUR 104 billion to urban lending including health, housing, urban transport or water and wastewater management.
Three days of meetings, debates and presentations in Naples for IFIB from 2nd to 4th October. With around 250 participants from 30 different countries, the International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy is confirmed as a leading event of the circular bioeconomy in Europe.
Naples was truly the world capital of the bioeconomy, hosting innovative companies such as LanzaTech, Fater, Novamont, Terravesta, Pirelli and Sulzer, research centers such as National Research Council of Italy, VTT of Finland, Wageningen University and Fiat Automotive Research Center. And then: TEAGASC (Ireland), Frost & Sullivan (UK), European Forest Institute, OECD, Bioeconomy Cluster of Slovakia, Cluster Food+i (Spain), Irish Bioeconomy Foundation and many other world bioeconomy stakeholders.
The bioeconomy revolution is really unstoppable and I strongly believe that the best has yet to come! I would like to thank once again all friends and colleagues who join IFIB in Naples. It was amazing!

According to OSTP, “the Bioeconomy represents the infrastructure, innovation, products, technology, and data derived from biologically-related processes and science that drive economic growth, promote health, and increase public benefit.”
